The shad kill is definitely in full swing and the trout are absolutely hammering any white streamer or baitfish pattern. Just about had the rod yanked out of my hand several times with some vicious strikes. The fish are keyed in big time on the shad and I saw many fish move several feet to eat the fly. Some of the trout have already begun to develop pot-bellies from gorging on the shad. By the time this thing runs its course, a lot of these trout will be positively obese and will look like footballs with fins. Plenty of cold water, unlimited supply of high nutrient food - pretty good time to be a trout in the Hiwassee right now.
Here are a couple of pretty cool shots of the river up by the powerhouse.
