Trip Report - 5/31 - America's Continuing Love Affair with Carp
My day ends like this: An elderly woman, easily 70, was fishing next to the boat ramp and she greeted me with a friendly wave as my canoe glided in to a stop.
"Were they bitin' today?"
"Yes maam, I managed a few."
"What were you fishing for?"
Long uncomfortable pause as her disdain went to seed and then sprouted full grown from her wrinkled old nose.
"Why in the world would you fish for those?" she said in a tone of voice that might have led anyone within earshot of this exchange to assume that not only was I fishing for carp, but I was using live kittens as bait.
"Well, they fight hard and they're fun to catch."
More uncomfortable silence. More disdain. Then finally...
"I like panfish myself."
With that she reeled in her bobber at warp speed and walked away.
